SIKH- A DISCIPLE OF THE GREAT WAHEGURU.

Sikh Society of Manitoba,1244 Mollard Road,Winnipeg
The early new Sikh comers to Winnipeg felt the need to have a place for getting
together , socializing and worshiping. This feeling caused a motivation for a
common place . Professor Hari Kirpal Singh Dulat , Mr. Gurcharan Singh Bhatia ,
Mr. Partap Singh Phangura , Mr. Mohinder Singh Dhillon, Mr. Bajwa, Mr. Hakam
Singh Johal and some of their associates organized to have a regular weekly
gathering for socializing , mutual interaction and supportive discussions which
over time resulted in the creation of The Sikh Society Of Manitoba Inc. The
Sikh Society was registered in 1969 and Prof. Dulat became its first president.
The first gathering of Manitoba Sikhs took place at the residence of Prof. Dulat in 1969 on the occasion of Vaiskhi Day. The first Akhand Path sewa after the registration of The Sikh Society was performed at the International Center on the occasion of the martyrdom day of Guru Arjan Dev Ji . During that same year, the 500th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji was celebrated at the home of MR. Partap Singh Phangura. There were less than twenty families of Indian origin living in Winnipeg at that time and they all got together to celebrate this special occasion of Gurpurab. By 1972 the number of Sikhs living in Winnipeg increased so much that it was not possible to have these gatherings in private homes. At this time Ths Sikh Society started its weekly gatherings at a place called Thawani Towers. This was an apartment high-rise building and was owned by a Sikh who let The Sikh Society use it for weekly congregations.
In 1978 The Sikh Society bought a church building on Cathcart Street in the Charleswood area of Winnipeg . Unfortunately not everybody agreed with this move and some members of The Sikh Society kept their weekly gatherings at Thiwani Towers and eventually registered their congregation under the name of Singh Sabha which is located at the Gurdwara Sahib on Sturgeon Rd. At Cathcart Gurdwara Sahib there was no permanent Giani ( pastor ) working for The Sikh Society so Mr. Gurmukh Singh Saroy took responsibility for most of the religious ceremonies held at the Gurdwara Sahib. Up until this time Nanaksar Sangat was also part of The Sikh Society .
Within a few years it was felt that the Gurdwara Building at Cathcart was not big enough for the increased Sikh population in Winnipeg and a decision was made to build a bigger building for The Sikh Society. In 1982 twenty acres of land were purchased at 1244 Mollard Rd. and construction for the new building began in September 1983. The Sikh Society was fortunate to have Mr. Lahora Singh Brar as its president at this crucial time . He is a well qualified and hard working Gursikh.
Construction of The Sikh Society was completed in ten months and Mr. Gurmit Singh Gill had taken over the presidency of the society by this time .The fifth Guru Arjan Dev’s martyrdom day was celebrated at the new building on June 4, 1984. However the new construction for this building proved to be too big of a project for the Sikh Society. Financial hardships fell upon the society but Kulwant Singh Gill the new president, rose to the occasion. There were big drives for donations in Winnipeg and other Canadian cities and the society was able to make it through this tough time .
In 1986, Darshan Singh Brar and the late Narinder Singh Toor, along with their associates were chosen for the management committee .At this time lots of amendments were made to the constitution of the society and a five member council was also established to conduct the elections of The Sikh Society. The five member council was given final authority to interpret the constitution and new rules such as, anybody holding the position of president or secretary was bared from holding either of these position for five years following the completion of their term, were implemented.
Within ten years of moving into the new building it was felt that there was a need for the expansion of the building. There was very limited space for the storage of clothes and shoes for both men and women. There was also no room for a library and not enough room for the accommodation of visiting preachers. Keeping all this in view ,it was decided to expand the building. Harbans Singh Brar was the president of the society when this expansion was completed. Due to having more available space, the society was also able to start a Punjabi School.
In 2004 Sikhs all over the world were celebrating the 400th anniversary of the installation of Guru Granth Sahib. It was decided that the Sikh Society along with other Sikh organizations of Winnipeg would arrange a nagar kirtan on that day. From that day on ,this has been an annual event celebrated and enjoyed by Winnipeg Sikhs. Tarsem Singh Cheema who was the president of the Sikh Society at that time should be commended for the effort he put into making this event a successful showcase for the Sikhs of Winnipeg. Our thanks also go to Gurtej Singh Malhi who arranges Langer ( free kitchen ) for the participants of Nagar Kirtan every year.
